Handmade merino wool rugs from the mountains of Kyrgyzstan

The distinctive arts of Kyrgyzstan are celebrated through our rugs, pillows, slippers’ and more that are made with a technique which is an integral part of the traditional nomadic lifestyle of Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyz nomads used them to insulate and decorate their moveable homes and kept them warm in winter and cool in the summer. The complex process, handed down from generation to generation, speaks to the family ties of this remote region. The primary material, merino wool, comes from sheep sheared in the spring. After shearing, prepped material is washed, dried, dyed, and pressed into wool sheets.  Merino wool’s fine fibers are water-resistant and air-permeable, odor-resistant, antimicrobial, and hypoallergenic.

Care for your Shyrdak Rugs

Shyrdaks remain extremely durable, especially when properly cared for.

Remove ordinary dirt and debris by shaking the rug outdoors. Vacuum clean on a low setting, but the brush attachment should not make contact with the rug itself.

If drinks spill or pet accidents occur on the carpet, absorb the liquid with a dry cloth first. Then, use warm soapy water to remove the stain.  It works great to place a bowl under the rug where the spot occurred and rinse the soapy water through the rug with clean water into the bowl below.

Complete periodic cleaning by a professional with experience in cleaning felt rugs.
